At The Children’s Clinic of Fredericksburg, we understand the importance of emotional and behavioral well-being in a child’s overall health. Our Behavior & Mental Health Unit provides a compassionate and supportive environment where children and adolescents can receive the care they need. From navigating life’s challenges to addressing specific mental health concerns, our team is here to help each child build a foundation for a healthy, fulfilling future.

Our approach to children’s mental health integrates medical and behavioral health services, allowing us to provide seamless, holistic care. We believe that every child deserves access to high-quality mental health services in a setting that feels safe, supportive, and tailored to their unique needs.

Play Therapy

Designed for younger children, play therapy allows kids to express thoughts and emotions through play, a natural medium for them. Our play therapy sessions help children feel comfortable and engaged while addressing emotional and behavioral concerns.

Creative Art Therapy

Art therapy taps into a child’s creativity as a means of expression, offering a way to communicate feelings that may be difficult to verbalize. This approach is particularly effective for children who feel more comfortable expressing themselves through creative outlets rather than words.

Individual and Family Counseling

Whether through one-on-one sessions or family-centered therapy, our counselors work collaboratively to address behavioral, emotional, and family dynamics that may impact a child’s mental health.

Our interdisciplinary approach ensures that each child receives individualized care, and we emphasize family involvement throughout the process. Families are invited to participate in sessions, discuss progress, and gain strategies to support their child’s well-being at home.

Integrated Medical and Behavioral Health Care

Our unique integrated model allows us to provide physical and mental health services in a cohesive care plan. At The Children’s Clinic of Fredericksburg, we recognize that children’s mental health is closely connected to their physical health. This integrated approach allows us to address both aspects comprehensively, fostering better outcomes and a more supportive experience for each child and family.

In cases where a child’s physical health may impact their mental well-being—or vice versa—our team collaborates closely to develop a holistic treatment plan. This approach also allows us to coordinate primary care check-ups, nutritional support, and any necessary medical interventions alongside mental health counseling.

Addressing a Wide Range of Mental Health Needs

Our clinic is equipped to support children and adolescents with a variety of emotional and behavioral health needs, including:

Anxiety Disorders

From generalized anxiety to social anxiety, we help children understand and manage feelings of worry and fear, building coping strategies and confidence.

Trauma and Grief Counseling

Children who have experienced traumatic events or significant loss benefit from therapy that allows them to process emotions in a safe environment, helping them heal and build coping skills.

Depression and Mood Disorders

Our counselors work with children and teens experiencing depression, mood swings, or feelings of sadness, using tailored therapy to build resilience and improve mood.

Self-Esteem and Social Skills Development

Our team supports children in building self-confidence, improving communication, and developing the skills needed to form healthy relationships with peers.

ADHD and Behavioral Challenges

We offer specialized support for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other behavioral conditions, helping children learn skills for focus, self-control, and positive behavior management.

By tailoring our approach to each child, we ensure that they receive the type of care and level of support that best suits their needs.

Our Approach:

Building a Path to Well-Being

We recognize that mental health support involves both the child and their family. At The Children’s Clinic of Fredericksburg, our approach is child-centered and family-inclusive. This means involving parents or guardians in the therapeutic process and offering guidance and strategies for supporting their child’s progress at home.

Our sessions are designed to be welcoming and engaging. We use methods like games, activities, and creative exercises to help children feel comfortable. These methods help our counselors build trust and establish a strong therapeutic relationship, essential for effective treatment.
